The Forest Poetry
BackYear 3 have recently been looking at adjectives and how they are used to enhance their writing, making it more enjoyable for the reader. We looked at our choice of adjectives, too, thinking about choosing “WOW” words rather than boring ones. We also noticed how they can be used at various points within sentences – sometimes maybe before nouns, sometimes afterwards, and also the effect of using two adjectives rather than one, to enhance our descriptions.
Using all this knowledge, we went on to write poems based on ‘The Forest’ after reading, “The Forest Child” by Richard Edwards for inspiration.
Have a look at these examples written by children in 3B – they are (for want of a better adjective) AMAZING!!
“The smell of the pretty, red flowers
The taste of the sticky, golden honey
The sound of the brown, howling wolf
The sight of the furry, soft bear
The touch of the crunchy, crackling leaves.”
by Tanya
The children have also been experimenting with exciting verbs and adverbs in their writing. Some children chose to include these in their poems, too.
“The smell of the wonderful flowers swaying gently in the grass
The sound of the heavy feet moving slowly through the trees
The sight of the beautiful leaves dancing restlessly on the branches
The touch of the cold air shaking quickly in the beaver den
The taste of the sweet honey tingling sharply in my mouth.”
by Anqing
“The sound of the blue birds tweeting softly through the forest
The smell of the sweet berries hanging carefully over the bushes near the pond
The sight of the tiny mouse running quickly over the leaves on the ground
The touch of the moist leaves blowing gently in the air
The taste of the sticky honey dripping slowly down the trees in the forest.”

Well done, Year 3!!
