Comic Writing in Year 3
BackIn English, Year Three have been reading the story of ‘The Forest Child’ by Richard Edwards. It is all about a little girl who lives with the animals in the forest. They have taught her how to survive.
The children discussed the setting, the vocabulary, the characters and the reasons for their actions. The children tried really hard to imagine themselves as one of the characters. A favourite was the hunter. Enthusiastic debates took place as to whether he was evil or simply misunderstood. Everyone had his or her own opinion.
The culmination of all this discussion was for the children to retell the story in the style of a comic, including illustrations and annotations. At the same time, they had to resist the urge to write as much as they could. Following on from this they then rewrote the story in their own words.
Here are some examples of our comic work. I am very proud of your efforts 3M, well done!
