Cool Maths in Reception - Learning about measuring height and length
Back
This week, we learnt about measuring length and height in our Mathematics lessons, linked to our Cold Lands topic.
Each class made some life-sized polar animals such as a penguin, snowy owl, arctic fox and lemming to practise measuring skills. Using everyday objects like k-nex sticks, magnetic tiles, cubes and hands, the children found out the height of each animal. They learnt the important steps such as starting at the bottom, keeping the line straight, not leaving any gaps between the units of measure and going all the way to the top. It was interesting to see the length of each animal and the children (and teachers!) were amazed how tall some of the animals are.
We also used language to compare the length and height such as tall, taller, tallest; short, shorter, shortest, long, longer, longest.
Everyone enjoyed standing next to the polar animals to compare heights, seeing who is the tallest and who is the shortest. It was also lots of fun to line up in height order with friends in the class. What a fun week of learning!
